(Not So) Random Song of the Day – ERB Edition – Part Nineteen

Another day, another two battle raps. These two are interesting, though, because in both cases, it’s less that the raps themselves did anything to damage the product and more that other elements damaged the experience for the viewer beyond what the battle raps themselves had to offer. These two, honestly, could’ve been much higher on the list with some changes, but here we are and there it is.

After getting the worst of the worst out of the way, from this point onward the season… mostly just skates by on a whole lot of nothing, honestly. While the top four entries from this season manage to pull off just enough talented work that they partially redeem the entire season, the majority of the season is just a whole bunch of acceptable ideas that are only marginally better or worse than one another. Put another way, the bottom two rap battles are bad, the top four are great, and the middle six are basically only mildly varied from one another because they accomplish very little beyond sticking two people against one another and hoping for the best.

(Not So) Random Song of the Day – ERB Edition – Part Seventeen

Well, it’s been a while, let’s start this out right.

For an idea as to what we’re doing here, refer back to the introduction for more details.

When we left off on these discussions, we had just completed an evaluation of the second season of ERB, and in that time period Peter and Lloyd have been busy, as we have another two whole seasons to talk about, which isn’t even counting the fifth (which is presently ongoing). While that’s great to a point, the third season kind of represents what I would call a “flattening” of the ERB product on the whole. While the first two seasons are full of all sorts of experimental moments, by the third season, the core concepts were more or less set in stone, and ERB had begun to expand in terms of the talent fielded for battle raps. That was great in theory, don’t get me wrong, but on the flipside, while Season Three has a couple of really solid releases, a whole lot of the season feels flat and uninspired, and the majority of the videos lack the punch of the first two seasons. Don’t get me wrong, there are some really strong winners in Season Three, at least, but Season Four basically beats the shit out of it pretty hard, thanks to several really strong tracks and only a couple flat entries, while the third season is a lot of “meh.” So let’s take a look at where Season Three went flat, starting with the worst videos and moving up the chain as we go.

We’re at the end of the line for the second season; I’ll be taking a week off before launching into the third season to recharge a bit, but we’ve still got one more entry to go in this season, and it’s a good one. These are easily the two best entries in the second season of ERB, and they’d also rank fairly high on an “all time” list if we put together such a list at any point; they’re technically sound, well produced, and entertaining as all get out. Let’s get down to business…

We’re in the final four here, and while there was a lot of nothing going on in the middle of these rankings, the top four tracks from this season easily rival the quality of any competing seasons, albeit for much different reasons from one another. The two we have today probably could’ve both been winners on their own merits, which says a lot about the quality of the final two videos for this season, as these two are generally some of the better battles released from ERB overall. It’s only some minor issues that hold these battles back from getting into the top two; let’s jump in and see what ranked and why for today:

We’re starting to get into the winning battle raps from this season, and with only two more postings to go in the second season, the quality of raps is going to ramp up a bit from here on. This entry features a guest appearance that was surprising and also incredibly welcome, as it happens, as well as the aforementioned “Lloyd mimics a singer better” bit I mentioned earlier in this season’s rankings. Let’s get to it:

Our two this time around are generally decent, actually, but are hampered by one performer doing something… odd; they aren’t hurt as much as some battle raps, where one performer sucks and the other can’t carry the weight, so much as this is a case of one person doing something they probably thought was great (and wasn’t), while the other performer does the Lord’s work to carry them through it. This is, truly, a case where two (or three) performers do the work of four (or six), and while it’s not enough to carry them out of the middle of the pack, it’s enough to deserve recognition at least.
